Carbon steel, stainless steel and aluminum are widely used in sheet-metal fabrication, but they respond differently to heat, oxidation, gas flow and process settings. A parameter set that works well for one material will not necessarily produce the same edge quality or productivity on another. Start with the exact material grade, thickness, surface condition and part requirements, then verify the process on the intended machine configuration.
Carbon steel is common in frames, brackets, equipment housings and structural parts. Depending on grade, thickness and the required edge condition, a validated process may use oxygen or another approved assist-gas arrangement. Oxygen can participate in an exothermic reaction, which affects the cutting process and may leave an oxide layer on the edge. If the part will be welded, painted or otherwise finished, confirm whether the edge condition is acceptable or whether additional preparation is required. The apparent cutting speed alone does not determine the best process; quality requirements and downstream costs matter too.
Stainless steel is used in enclosures, kitchen equipment, food-processing equipment and visible components. Where oxidation or discoloration is undesirable, nitrogen-based cutting is often evaluated, subject to the machine, thickness and process window. Gas purity and delivery, nozzle condition, focus, speed and material surface condition all influence the result. Do not promise a perfectly oxide-free, burr-free edge or no post-processing solely because the material is stainless steel. Define the acceptance criteria and validate them on the actual grade and thickness.
Aluminum conducts heat readily, and its surface reflectivity at common fiber-laser wavelengths should be considered during machine and process assessment. Actual cutting performance depends on alloy grade, temper, surface condition, thickness, laser source and cutting-head design. Confirm that the machine manufacturer supports the intended material and operating conditions, and follow the applicable back-reflection protection and process guidance. A machine's rated laser power alone does not establish that every aluminum sheet can be cut to the same thickness, speed or edge-quality requirement.
