Laser-cutting software converts two-dimensional geometry into toolpaths that the machine control can execute. A file may open successfully and still contain a scale mismatch, duplicate lines, open contours, unsuitable layers or inconsistent units. These issues can increase programming time, create unexpected paths or produce parts at the wrong size. Actual file support depends on the nesting software, CAM application and control-system version.
DXF is widely used to exchange two-dimensional CAD data; DWG is commonly associated with CAD drawing files. Some workflows also use other CAD formats or software-specific intermediate files. The extension alone does not guarantee compatibility. Confirm the supported version, entity types, units and layer conventions in the target application. Complex splines, text, annotations or three-dimensional entities may need conversion or cleanup before they are suitable for cutting.
1. Units and scale. Confirm whether the drawing uses millimetres, inches or another unit. Compare a known dimension with the imported geometry before programming.
2. Closed contours. External and internal profiles must meet the geometry requirements of the software. Small gaps can prevent correct path recognition.
3. Duplicate and irrelevant entities. Overlapping lines can produce duplicate toolpaths. Dimensions, centerlines or notes may be mistaken for cutting geometry if they are not handled correctly.
4. Layers and line types. Separate cutting profiles, marking and other operations according to the actual software workflow. Different applications interpret colors, layers and line types differently.
5. Revision control. Use an approved drawing revision and record the file name, revision and date to prevent obsolete geometry entering production.
After import, verify dimensions, contour count, inner/outer profile relationships and nesting. Simulate the toolpath and review pierce points, lead-ins, cutting sequence and part spacing. Once the first part is produced, inspect critical dimensions and edge condition, then update the program or process record where necessary. Simulation can identify some errors, but it does not replace an actual cut and inspection.
