Holes, Narrow Slots and Complex Contours: Design Considerations for Laser-Cut Parts

laatste bedrijfskennis over Holes, Narrow Slots and Complex Contours: Design Considerations for Laser-Cut Parts
Design for manufacturability starts before programming

A laser can produce many two-dimensional contours, but a shape that can be drawn in CAD is not automatically economical or stable to manufacture. Hole diameter, slot width, sharp corners, spacing, slender features, sheet thickness and downstream forming all affect manufacturability. Early communication among design, process engineering and production teams helps identify avoidable risks before parts reach the machine.

Hole size and sheet thickness

There is no single minimum hole size that applies to every material and machine. As a hole becomes smaller, heat concentration, melt ejection and contour control can become more challenging, particularly in thicker sheet or dense hole patterns. Evaluate the material, thickness, hole function, tolerance and required edge condition together. For a locating or mating hole, drilling, reaming or another finishing operation may be more suitable where the application requires it.

Narrow slots, sharp corners and slender features

Narrow slots create closely spaced cutting paths, and local heat accumulation can affect dimensional stability. A mathematically sharp internal corner may not be practical under every beam, motion-control and material condition. Consider a suitable radius, slot-width adjustment, cutting sequence and inspection method. Slender or weak features also need attention: they may move, warp or lose support during cutting.

Spacing, nesting and downstream operations

Parts need adequate spacing for the process, kerf, heat effects, skeleton strength and safe removal. Dense nesting can improve material utilization, but it may also make parts difficult to remove, increase deformation risk or complicate finishing. Design reviews should include bend lines, welds, coating boundaries and assembly datums so a correctly cut part can progress into the next operation without unnecessary rework.
